Last month, Lisbon had its 5th annual Mega Picnic. This free event is organized by one of the major grocery store chains in conjunction with other organizations including the City of Lisbon and an Agriculture Union. It is a great way to showcase their domestic producers and to raise awareness of the produce and meats that can be found in this 92.212km2 country.
The mega picnic was in the historical Terreiro do Paço and it was packed with families. It was super fun to stroll around with my Canadian half and baby and smell the herbs, point at the animals and transplant a few lettuces while dodging very excited children.
Wouldn’t it be great to have something similar in Newfoundland and Labrador? The St. John’s Farmer’s Market already started a great trend but an event like this, even on a smaller scale, could promote local produce to the general population, pressure grocers into having more local fresh products while refuting the common notion that nothing grows in this province.
