Hello there! My name is Paula but sometimes I’m known as Olivia. Olivia Canela started as being my all-natural skin care company based in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Now this site is much more than creams and balms. It’s about the small steps our family is taking to achieve an earthier lifestyle while living in the capital city of a big Atlantic Canadian island. You can read more about me, Olivia Canela, and what Small Batch Living is all about here.
What do I write about?
We love cooking and eating meals prepared with real ingredients. We are known to make our own bacon, gravlax, chutneys, and sauerkraut. Supper is Ready! features our weekly meals with links to where the recipes can be found. Original recipes also populate the site.
Food security awareness is particularly staggering when you live on a cold island in the middle of the Atlantic known as the Rock. Fresh food is hard to find, especially in the winter. I have been growing vegetables and fruits for over 5 years in containers, raised beds, and some lent plots. We also forage for mushrooms and berries. It is incredible how much food one can grow and gather even in less than hospitable weather conditions. I find surrounding yourself by passionate gardeners eager to share their knowledge really helps the bounty grow each year.
Parenthood expectedly fully consumes your life. I write about cooking with and for our child, working in the garden with this little helper, and suggestions to help you find a “greener” lifestyle with a toddler and a baby in tow.
The province of Newfoundland and Labrador has plenty of stunning spots from farms right in the heart of the city to beautiful towns around the island. We are lucky to have a child that loves to explore as much as us. We also travel regularly within mainland Canada and Portugal, where I was born and raised.
A place where you can find natural body-care recipes, thoughts on yoga, and overall ways I use to find balance and focus. I also share the workshops that my most recent passion – SeaBerry Studios – hosts.
